Why Isn’t My Business Showing Up in ChatGPT?
Five reasons, ordered from the five-minute fix to the six-month one. Most businesses fail at step one and never find out.
The most common reasons are, in order: your site blocks AI crawlers, answer engines can’t confirm what your business is, nobody outside your own website mentions you, or you don’t rank in the top 20 organic results. The first is a five-minute fix. The rest take months.
Work through these in order. The early ones are cheap to check and cost you nothing but time; there's no point building an off-site presence if a crawler directive is quietly discarding all of it.
1. Are you blocking the crawler?
Check yoursite.com/robots.txt for lines disallowing GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, or Google-Extended. Many site builders and SEO plugins add these by default. If they’re present, nothing else you do will matter.
This is the single most common silent failure. A site can do everything else right and remain invisible because a well-meaning plugin blocked AI training crawlers two years ago and nobody revisited it.
Two related checks. First, if your content only renders via JavaScript, most AI crawlers won't see it — they generally don't execute JS the way a browser does. Second, if you have no robots.txt at all, you're fine: crawlers default to allowed.
2. Can AI confirm what your business is?
Before an engine recommends you, it has to classify you with some confidence. It does that by cross-referencing what it finds about you across sources. When your business name, description, and category differ between your website, LinkedIn, Google Business Profile, and directory listings, none of it corroborates — and a model that can't resolve what you are will recommend a competitor it can.
Make the name, one-line description, and category identical everywhere. Then mirror that in Organization schema with sameAs links pointing at each verified profile. The schema doesn't earn you citations on its own, but it removes ambiguity about identity.
3. Does anyone outside your website mention you?
Per Airops, brands are roughly 6.5x more likely to be cited in AI answers through third-party sources than through their own domain. Ahrefs found web-wide brand mentions correlate at 0.664 with AI visibility, and YouTube mentions at 0.737 — the strongest single signal measured.
If every mention of your business lives on your own website, you look unverified. Models are effectively asking "does anyone else corroborate this," and the answer is no.
This is usually the real problem, and it's the slowest to fix. Directory profiles, industry press, podcast appearances, guest articles, and substantive answers in the communities your buyers actually read — ChatGPT weights Reddit, Quora, and G2 heavily for exactly this reason.
4. Do you rank in the top 20 organic results?
For Google AI Overviews specifically, 97% of cited sources come from the top 20 organic results. If you rank on page three, AI Overviews are closed to you regardless of how good your content is.
ChatGPT is less strict but still authority-weighted: sites with 32,000+ referring domains are roughly 3.5x more likely to be cited. You probably won't win that comparison directly — which is why the external-mention work in step three matters more for you than chasing domain authority.
5. Is your content actually extractable?
Models lift short, self-contained passages that answer a question directly. Long unbroken marketing copy gives them nothing to quote.
- Put a 40–60 word direct answer immediately under each heading
- Write headings as the questions people actually ask
- Attribute every statistic inline — "per Ahrefs' 2026 study" — rather than leaving numbers unsourced
- Use numbered lists; Perplexity's interface favors them
- Keep a visible
dateModified. Perplexity weights recency heavily, and roughly 65% of AI bot hits target recently published or updated content
How do I check what ChatGPT says about me?
Ask it directly, but ask the way a customer would. "What is Acme Plumbing" tells you little. "Who are the best plumbers in Sacramento" tells you whether you're in the consideration set.
Build a fixed list of 20 buyer-style prompts and run them weekly across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews. Record whether you were mentioned and whether your site was cited — these are different metrics, and on Gemini the overlap between them can be as low as 30%.
Run this before you change anything. Without a baseline, you can't tell improvement from a model update.
How long until it changes?
Perplexity can pick up new or updated content within days because it retrieves in real time. ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews follow organic authority and external mentions, so realistically 6 to 12 months. Nobody controls model output, and any guarantee of specific citations should be treated as a red flag.
If you want the fastest possible signal that something is working, watch Perplexity first and branded search volume second. Both move earlier than AI Overviews.
