What Is Answer Engine Optimization?

AEO is how you get named when someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google’s AI for a recommendation. Here is what it involves, what the research shows actually works, and what it does not.

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of getting your business named and cited by AI answer engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, and Claude — when people ask them for recommendations. The goal is being the recommendation itself, not ranking a link someone might click.

For twenty years, search worked one way: you typed a query, got ten blue links, and picked one. Optimization meant climbing that list.

That model is breaking down. More than 60% of Google searches now end without a click to any third-party website. When someone asks an AI assistant "who's the best roofer in Denver," they don't get ten options to evaluate. They get one answer naming two or three businesses. If you aren't among them, you didn't lose the comparison — you were never in it, and you'll never see the impression that didn't happen.

How is AEO different from SEO?

SEO optimizes for ranking positions in a list of links. AEO optimizes for being named inside a generated answer. SEO is a prerequisite for AEO rather than a replacement: 97% of sources cited in Google AI Overviews come from the top 20 organic results, so weak rankings close the door before AEO begins.

The practical difference is where the work happens. SEO is largely on-site — your pages, your structure, your links. AEO is mostly off-site. Answer engines are deciding whether to trust a claim about your business, and they weigh what the rest of the web says about you far more heavily than what you say about yourself.

According to Airops, brands are roughly 6.5x more likely to be cited in AI answers through third-party sources than through their own domain. That single statistic should reshape how you budget effort.

Which answer engines actually matter?

All of them, but not in the same way — and not with the same tactics. Ahrefs found that only 11% of domains are cited by both ChatGPT and Perplexity. Optimizing generically for "AI" produces generic results.

EngineHow it selects sourcesWhat that means for you
Google AI OverviewsDraws almost entirely from existing organic results — 97% from the top 20.Fix your organic rankings first. There is no shortcut around this gate.
PerplexityRetrieves in real time. New content can be cited within hours of indexing; roughly 65% of AI bot hits target recently published or updated pages.Publish often and refresh old content. Speed is a genuine advantage here.
ChatGPTLeans on external validation — Reddit, Quora, G2, Wikipedia. Sites with 32,000+ referring domains are 3.5x more likely to be cited. You won't win on domain authority. Win on being mentioned where it looks.
GeminiMentioning a brand and citing its domain are loosely coupled — overlap can be as low as 30%.Track mentions and citations separately or you'll misread your results.

What actually makes AI cite a source?

External signals dominate. Ahrefs' 2026 analysis found YouTube mentions correlate at 0.737 with AI visibility — the strongest single factor measured — and web-wide brand mentions at 0.664. Adding schema markup in isolation showed no measurable effect in a controlled study.

In rough priority order:

  1. Video presence. The highest-correlating signal, and the one almost no small business competes on.
  2. Brand mentions across the web. Podcasts, guest articles, directories, community answers. Unlinked mentions still count.
  3. Presence in trusted validation sources. Reddit, Quora, G2 — the places ChatGPT checks before recommending.
  4. Organic rankings. The hard gate for AI Overviews.
  5. Extractable content. Short direct answers, question-form headings, statistics with named attribution.
  6. Entity clarity. Consistent name, description, and verified profiles everywhere, mirrored in structured data.

A caution about schema. Most AEO providers lead with structured data. It matters — it defines your entity so models can classify you — but it is table stakes, not a growth lever. We cover the evidence in does schema markup actually help AI search.

How long does AEO take to work?

Perplexity citations can shift within weeks because it retrieves in real time and favors fresh content. Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT track organic authority and realistically take 6 to 12 months. Any provider promising faster, or guaranteeing specific citations, is describing something they cannot control.

No one controls model output. Reputable practitioners will tell you that plainly; a guarantee of specific AI citations is the clearest signal you're being sold to rather than advised.

Do I still need AEO if I already rank well?

Ranking well is the foundation, not the finish line. Strong organic rankings make you eligible for AI Overview citation — but eligibility isn't selection. Among a set of similarly-ranked competitors, the one that gets named tends to be the one with more external validation: more mentions, more third-party corroboration, clearer entity signals.

If you rank in the top ten and still never appear in AI answers, the gap is almost always off-site.

How do I know if AEO is working?

Measure before you change anything. Pick 20 prompts your buyers would realistically type, run them weekly across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and AI Overviews, and log two things separately: whether you were mentioned, and whether your site was cited as the source. Those diverge sharply by engine.

Watch branded search volume too. A rise in people searching your name directly is often the first sign AI has started recommending you.

Without a baseline you cannot tell a working program from a model update — and models update constantly.
